His Mistress Ordered Dinner Inside My Own House

Part 5 - My Name on the Door

I didn't sign the contract on the porch.

I gave him Denise's contact information and told him all event bookings went through the office.

He smiled awkwardly.

“Of course.”

It was remarkable how quickly people could learn a rule once I stopped apologizing for having it.

The dinner was loud and imperfect. Julia spilled wine. One of the nurses brought a cake that leaned to one side. Nobody commented on whether my house looked alive.

It was alive because I was in it without shrinking.

Over the next several months, the financial and legal consequences of Adrian's promises were handled by the people qualified to handle them. Celeste pursued the money she had advanced. I provided the records requested of me and stopped trying to manage how everyone felt about what they showed.

The divorce did not make me instantly happy.

It made me able to tell the truth about why I wasn't.

Some evenings I missed the familiar sound of Adrian's car. Other evenings I remembered the way he had said not tonight while another woman stood in my hallway, and I slept better alone.

Both feelings belonged to me. Neither required me to go back.

At work, we hired two more people. I stopped introducing the company as something I did on the side. There was no larger, more important life waiting behind it. This was part of my life, and I had built it.

A year after the night Celeste handed me her coat, we opened a small teaching kitchen beside the production space.

The first class sold out.

I stood at the entrance wearing a clean dark apron. A young woman arrived early and glanced at the sign above the door.

Meredith Vale. Founder.

“Are you Meredith?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“I almost didn't come. I'm fifty, and I thought it might be too late to learn something new.”

I took her coat because I wanted her to feel welcome.

Then I handed her an apron.

“Let's find out what you can make.”
