My Family Vacationed While My Daughter Needed Surgery
Part 4 - Thursday Morning
She arrived fifteen minutes early.
I had been ready with a backup plan. I did not apologize for that.
In the car, she tried once to mention Ben. I said we were not discussing him in front of Ruby. She stopped.
At the appointment, she listened. She carried the bag. She waited while I spoke with the clinician instead of announcing that everything would be fine.
On the way home, Ruby fell asleep.
My mother looked at her in the mirror.
“I should have come back,” she said.
“Yes.”
“I thought you had everything under control.”
“Having control isn't the same as not needing anyone.”
She nodded and cried quietly. I watched the road and let her have the discomfort without rescuing her from it.
Ben came the next weekend. I met him outside while Denise stayed with Ruby.
He brought a toy larger than our coffee table.
“Take it back,” I said.
“It’s for her.”
“She needs you to stop lying to her mother more than she needs this.”
He put it in the car.
For a while, he argued. Then he ran out of familiar accusations and told me he was afraid Amy would leave.
“That is something you need to address with her.”
“You're my sister.”
“Yes. I'm not your escape route.”
Eventually, he agreed to provide records and a repayment plan. I had someone help me put it in a clear form. It would take time, and I knew I might never recover everything.
What I could recover immediately was the right to say no before the account balance reached zero.
As Ruby improved, our days became less dominated by appointments. She returned to school gradually. I returned to work without checking my phone every thirty seconds.
One evening, she asked whether we could still take the little trip we had been saving for.
I opened our budget.
For the first time in years, there was no line labeled emergency help for someone who never planned for emergencies.
I looked at her across the table.
“Yes,” I said. “Let's choose where.”
