The Waitress Who Knew the Boy's Name Before the Chandelier Fell

CHAPTER 1 - THE NAME SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN

"Noah!"

Lena Morales had already seen the chandelier tilt.

One second it was glittering above the aisle beside the booths. The next, the metal rod snapped with a sharp cry, and the whole thing dropped.

The little boy was crouched on the floor, reaching for a red toy car.

He looked up.

He froze.

Lena did not think. She flung her tray aside and lunged.

Glass exploded behind her as she grabbed him and threw both of them beneath the edge of the booth. She curved her body over his small frame. Shards skidded across the floor. Something sliced through the back of her shoulder, hot and bright, but she barely felt it.

The boy shook in her arms.

Lena lifted her head enough to cup his face.

"Hey, Noah. Look at me. You're safe now."

His eyes were wide and wet, but he nodded.

Then his father came running.

He dropped to his knees beside them, pale with terror, and gathered the boy into his chest. Noah clung to his shirt, sobbing.

"She saved me, Dad."

The man looked at Lena then, really looked at her. He was around forty, still handsome in a tired way, wearing a loosened tie and the stunned expression of someone who had almost lost everything.

"Thank you," he started.

Then he stopped.

His brow tightened.

"How do you know his name?"

The air seemed to drain out of the room.

Lena's hand, half-raised toward the boy, trembled and fell back to her side. She could not look at the father. She could only look at Noah.

Tears slid down her cheeks before she could stop them.

"Because..." Her voice broke. "That's the only thing I gave him."

The father's face emptied.

For one terrible second, he said nothing.

Then, from behind him, an older woman at the booth stood up so abruptly her wineglass tipped over.

She stared at Lena like she had seen a ghost.

"Lena?" she whispered. "My God. You're supposed to be dead."
