CHAPTER 4 — The Child They Called Confused

Vanessa's plan went beyond financial fraud.

She had arranged appointments with a psychiatrist connected to the Laurent clinic. The doctor prepared reports describing Sophie as emotionally disturbed, dishonest and dangerously attached to household employees.

After the wedding, Vanessa intended to use those reports to send Sophie to a residential treatment center.

With the child removed, no one could challenge Vanessa's control of the Ashford household or foundation.

Julian listened to the doctor's recorded statement.

Then he removed Vanessa's engagement ring from the family insurance policy.

"The wedding is canceled."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You're choosing a confused child and a maid over me?"

"I'm choosing the people you tried to silence."

Financial investigators arrested Nathan. Vanessa was charged with conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering and filing false medical documents.

Anna's whistleblower complaint was reopened. The medical board cleared her name and restored her nursing license.

The Laurent clinic's stolen funds were recovered.

Julian expected Anna to remain at the estate.

Instead, she resigned.

Sophie clung to her uniform.

"You're leaving me too?"

Anna knelt.

"No, sweetheart. But your father needs the chance to become the person you run to when you're frightened."

Julian understood.

Anna had filled a space he had left empty.

Keeping her as an employee would allow him to avoid changing.

He reduced his business travel and began family counseling with Sophie. At first, she still asked for Anna every night.

Anna visited weekly, no longer wearing a uniform.

Sophie slowly learned that people could leave a room without abandoning her.

Julian and Anna also began speaking as equals.

He learned she had lost her younger sister to an illness made worse by delayed treatment. That loss drove her to become a nurse and challenge the Laurent clinic.

Months later, Anna accepted a position directing a new pediatric support center funded by the recovered money.

On opening day, Sophie ran toward her.

But Anna looked behind the child.

Julian had not arrived.

His car had been found beside the highway with the driver's door open.

Then Sophie received a message from his phone: "Bring the rabbit's memory card if you want your father back."
