CHAPTER 5 — The Family Nobody Could Purchase
Vanessa had arranged the final threat from custody.
A former Laurent security employee kidnapped Julian, hoping to exchange him for the memory card containing evidence against Nathan.
But Anna had already given police a certified copy.
The original card inside Sophie's repaired rabbit was useless to them.
Investigators traced Julian's phone to an abandoned Laurent clinic building. Police rescued him and arrested the security employee.
Vanessa received additional charges for directing the kidnapping. She and Nathan were later convicted and sentenced to prison.
The Ashford and Laurent foundations were separated permanently. Control of the pediatric programs passed to an independent board led by doctors, nurses and parents.
One year later, Sophie stood inside the same ballroom.
This time, the celebration honored Anna and other medical whistleblowers.
Sophie wore her blue dress and held the repaired rabbit.
Julian approached her.
"There's something I need to ask Anna."
Sophie narrowed her eyes.
"Did you already ask her?"
"Not yet."
"Good. Because she gets to choose."
Anna entered wearing a simple evening dress. No apron. No uniform. No one could order her back to the service entrance.
Julian did not propose before the guests.
Instead, he invited Anna and Sophie into the quiet garden.
"I don't need someone to replace Clara," he told Anna. "And Sophie doesn't need a woman hired to care for her. We want you because of who you are."
Anna looked at Sophie.
"What do you think?"
Sophie held out one hand to Anna and the other to her father.
"I choose both of you."
Anna accepted Julian's proposal six months later, after more counseling and time together.
At their small wedding, Sophie stood between them.
No one asked her to present a family brooch.
She carried her rabbit and both rings.
Sophie once called a maid Mommy because Anna was the only person who held her—then the adults finally learned how to hold on to one another.
