I Offered Everything I Owned to Hear My Daughter Speak Again

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY AT THE GALA

Andrew Hale gripped the microphone with both hands.

"My girl hasn't said a single word since her mom passed away."

His voice broke.

Beside him, seven-year-old Lucy stood beneath the ballroom lights with her head lowered.

It had been ten months since Mara died in a highway accident.

Ten months since Lucy had called Andrew "Daddy."

Doctors said she was physically capable of speaking. Grief had simply locked her voice somewhere no one could reach.

Andrew looked across the ballroom.

White roses covered the tables. Hundreds of guests had attended the memorial fundraiser, but no amount of money had helped his daughter.

"If anyone can get her to speak," he said, "I'll give them everything I own."

Several guests lowered their eyes.

Then a small voice rose from the back.

"Let me try."

An eight-year-old boy in a green hoodie stood between two crowded tables.

His clothes were clean but worn. His curly brown hair fell across his forehead.

Andrew pulled Lucy closer.

"This isn't a game."

"I know."

"Where are your parents?"

"My grandmother brought me."

Andrew looked around but saw no one approaching.

Grief sharpened his voice.

"Go away. You don't know what you're talking about."

The boy did not argue.

He simply placed one hand over the left side of his chest.

Then he tapped a rhythm against his hoodie.

Three slow beats.

Two quick ones.

Three slow beats again.

Lucy raised her head.

Her eyes widened.

The boy began humming a simple lullaby.

Andrew knew that melody.

Mara had sung it to Lucy every night.

Lucy stepped away from him and stared at the boy as though she had seen a ghost.

Her lips parted.

The first sound was barely audible.

"Sam."

The boy smiled through his tears.

Lucy pointed at his chest.

Then she spoke three more words.

"Mommy is there."

Sam slowly unzipped his hoodie.

A surgical scar ran down the center of his chest.
