I Offered Everything I Owned to Hear My Daughter Speak Again
CHAPTER 3 - THE LETTER AND THE LULLABY
Mara's letter explained everything.
Sam's mother had died when he was four.
Ruth cared for him alone, but her health was failing. Mara had begun helping them apply for medical assistance and long-term guardianship support.
She never planned to replace Ruth.
She wanted to make sure Sam would have a family if Ruth could no longer care for him.
Mara had tried to tell Andrew.
But each conversation ended the same way.
Andrew was always working.
Always traveling.
Always asking if the discussion could wait.
On the night she died, Mara called him three times.
He had silenced his phone during a business dinner.
Guilt pressed against his chest.
Lucy climbed into the chair beside him.
"Why didn't you answer Mommy?"
It was the longest sentence she had spoken in months.
Andrew could have lied.
Instead, he told her the truth.
"I thought work was more important. I was wrong."
Sam sat across from them.
"The doctors wouldn't tell me whose heart I got. But after the operation, I kept dreaming about that song."
Ruth believed it was Sam's memory of Mara visiting him.
Lucy believed something else.
She placed her small hand over his chest.
"She remembered us."
Sam reached into his backpack and removed an old digital recorder.
"Mara gave this to my grandmother before the accident."
He pressed play.
Mara's voice filled the quiet ballroom.
She sang Lucy's lullaby.
Then she spoke directly to her daughter.
"My sweet girl, if you ever feel alone, tap our little rhythm. Love always answers."
Lucy began tapping against Sam's hand.
Three slow beats.
Two quick ones.
Three slow beats.
Andrew wept openly.
The recording should have ended there.
Instead, Mara's voice returned after several seconds of static.
"Sam, only play the second message if Lucy recognizes you."
Sam looked at Andrew.
"There is another recording."
He pressed the button again.
This time, Mara revealed why Lucy had stopped speaking.
