The Funeral Was Built Around One Deadly Lie
CHAPTER 3 - THE RECORDING IN THE SAFE
Police placed guards outside my father's room.
Noah stopped answering his phone.
I returned to the family estate with Detective Harris.
Maria's clothes were gone.
So were several paintings and documents from my father's office.
The study safe remained locked behind a bookshelf.
My father had written the combination on the hospital board.
Inside, we found bank statements showing millions transferred from the family foundation into shell companies.
Each transfer had been approved by Noah.
The receiving accounts belonged to Maria.
There was also a copy of my father's real will.
It divided his estate between me and the medical charities he had supported for thirty years.
Maria received the lake house and a generous lifetime income.
It was not enough for her.
Beneath the will was a voice recorder.
My father had activated it during his final confrontation with Maria.
His voice filled the study.
"I know about the transfers."
Maria answered calmly.
"You should have enjoyed your retirement instead of checking the accounts."
Then Noah spoke.
My stomach turned.
The attorney had been inside the house.
He warned my father that the new will was already prepared.
My father threatened to call the police.
A cup shattered.
Then his body struck the floor.
Maria's voice came closer to the recorder.
"The drug worked."
Noah sounded nervous.
"What if Daniel comes back?"
"He hasn't visited in two years. He will believe his father died hating him."
That was another lie.
I had stayed away because Maria told me my father wanted no contact.
She told him I had refused every invitation.
She isolated us before trying to kill him.
"You did not bury one man," I said. "You tried to bury an entire family."
The final seconds contained a chilling sound.
Noah asked where they would find someone to sign the death certificate.
Maria laughed.
"My first husband taught me everything about false identities."
Detective Harris immediately searched her history.
Maria's legal name did not exist before she married my father.
Then the hospital called.
A woman claiming to be my father's wife had arrived with a court order.
Maria intended to remove him from protective care.
