The Funeral Was Built Around One Deadly Lie
CHAPTER 4 - THE WIFE AT THE HOSPITAL
Maria stood outside my father's room with two private security guards.
She held a medical power of attorney bearing my father's signature.
The document authorized her to move him to a private facility.
"That paper is forged," I said.
Maria smiled.
"Can you prove it?"
Detective Harris took the document.
My father's signature appeared genuine.
But the date was from the previous week, when security footage showed him attending a conference in another city.
Maria had copied his signature from older records.
Her security guards stepped away after learning police were investigating an attempted murder.
Then Noah arrived with another attorney.
He claimed my father was mentally incompetent and accused me of manipulating him for money.
My father heard everything from his bed.
He removed his oxygen mask.
His voice was weak but clear.
"My wife drugged me, and Noah helped her bury me alive."
Noah stopped moving.
My father identified the sedative, the false will and the recording inside his safe.
Police arrested Noah before he reached the elevator.
Maria tried to run.
She was caught near the emergency stairs.
Her pearl necklace broke during the arrest, scattering across the floor.
The same pearls she clutched while pretending to mourn the man she intended to bury.
My father's testimony should have ended the nightmare.
Instead, alarms suddenly sounded inside his room.
His heart rhythm became unstable.
Doctors pushed us into the corridor and began emergency treatment.
The sedative had damaged his heart.
He needed immediate surgery.
Before they took him away, he reached for my hand.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"For what?"
"For believing her when she said you didn't love me."
I held his hand until the nurses separated us.
"I came back, Dad."
The operating room doors closed.
Three hours later, the surgeon appeared.
My father's heart had stopped during the procedure.
They had been trying to revive him for six minutes.
