PART 4 - THE PRICE OF AN APOLOGY

My public relations team wanted to release the forged application.

It would have destroyed Lorraine's credibility immediately.

I refused.

Public humiliation had already caused enough damage.

I issued one sentence:

The engagement ended for private reasons. I wish Natalie well.

Lorraine responded by giving interviews.

She described me as manipulative and claimed I had hidden my identity to test her daughter.

There was some truth in that accusation.

I had not lied about my work, but I had allowed Natalie to believe I was an ordinary employee.

I wanted proof that she loved me without wealth.

In doing so, I had created a relationship in which neither of us was completely honest.

That did not excuse her cruelty.

But it forced me to examine my own choices.

Natalie ended the interviews herself.

She released a statement accepting responsibility for insulting the staff and submitting the application.

She did not mention her mother.

She did not blame me.

Then she visited the dealership.

She apologized to the cleaner whose shift I had covered.

She apologized to Rosa.

Finally, she sat beside Victor in the employee cafeteria and asked about his life.

Lorraine arrived and demanded that she leave.

For the first time, Natalie refused.

"You made me believe dignity came from being close to rich people."

"It does," Lorraine replied.

Natalie looked around at the mechanics eating lunch.

"No. Dignity comes from how you treat people who cannot improve your status."

Lorraine walked out alone.

Natalie began meeting Victor every Sunday.

She also withdrew the false financing application in writing and paid the dealership's legal costs with her own savings.

I respected her actions.

I did not restore the engagement.

Real change required more than a week of apologies.

Three months later, Victor brought me the final unopened letter from his toolbox.

It was not addressed to Natalie.

It was addressed to me.

My father had written it shortly before his death.

Victor had been waiting to give it to the man Natalie eventually chose to marry.
