My Fiancée Thought I Was the Car Cleaner
PART 5 - THE WORK THAT COMES AFTER REGRET
My father's letter contained no advice about wealth.
It contained a warning.
Julian,
Never marry someone because she admires your success.
Marry someone who understands the work beneath it.
He had written those words after meeting Natalie once.
My father noticed how she spoke to a restaurant server. I had ignored it because I wanted the relationship to succeed.
Six months passed.
Natalie sold the luxury jewelry Lorraine had given her and used part of the money to repay expenses connected to the forged application.
She donated the rest to the dealership's apprenticeship fund.
Victor asked her not to do it out of guilt.
She answered that guilt had started the process, but responsibility would have to finish it.
Lorraine continued insisting that her daughter had thrown away the opportunity of a lifetime.
Natalie stopped answering those messages.
I focused on the company.
We expanded the apprenticeship program and promoted Rosa to oversee employee welfare across all our locations.
The blue cloth from that morning remained inside my desk.
It reminded me that leadership was not proven in private lounges.
It was proven when no task felt beneath you.
One afternoon, Natalie returned to the showroom.
She wore no expensive jewelry.
She did not ask about the Rolls-Royce.
She had come to collect Victor after his shift.
Before leaving, she approached me.
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
"I already have."
Hope appeared in her eyes.
I continued.
"Forgiveness and trust are not the same thing."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Trust isn't restored by discovering who I am. It's restored by proving who you are."
She did not ask for another chance.
That was the first reason I considered giving her one.
We began with coffee.
Then dinner.
No ring.
No promises.
Only honesty.
A year after the confrontation, Natalie entered the dealership with Victor.
She walked past the most expensive car without looking at it.
Mr. Alvarez watched her approach my office.
"Should I send her into the private lounge?" he asked.
I smiled.
"No."
I picked up the blue cloth and headed toward the showroom.
"If we're starting again, we'll start where the truth came out."
