CHAPTER 3 — The Man Who Saw the Crash

Thomas Reed had been Daniel's family driver.

He disappeared one week after Amelia's accident.

Detective Grant found him living under another name in a coastal village. When police brought him in, Thomas looked at Daniel and began to cry.

"I thought she was dead."

"Tell me what happened."

Thomas admitted that Vanessa had ordered him to follow Amelia on the night of the accident.

Amelia had discovered Vanessa transferring money from Daniel's company into secret accounts. She planned to expose everything.

Vanessa rammed Amelia's car near the bridge.

Thomas pulled Amelia from the river, but Vanessa arrived before he could call for help.

She threatened his family and paid him to take Amelia to her brother's private clinic.

Amelia survived with a head injury and partial memory loss.

Vanessa's brother kept her sedated for months, repeatedly telling her that Daniel wanted nothing to do with her.

When Amelia discovered she was pregnant, a sympathetic nurse helped her escape.

"Why didn't she come home?" Daniel asked.

"Vanessa showed her photographs of you together."

After Amelia's disappearance, Vanessa had moved into Daniel's house, controlled his mail and gradually became his fiancee.

DNA results arrived that afternoon.

Lucy was Daniel's daughter.

Amelia was his wife.

Daniel went to Amelia's room and placed the results beside her.

"I never stopped loving you."

Amelia looked away.

"But you trusted her."

He could not deny it.

Vanessa had lied, but Daniel's grief made him surrender control of his life without questioning anything.

Detective Grant uncovered more than twelve million dollars stolen from Daniel's company. Vanessa planned to marry him the following weekend. Once married, she would gain access to the remainder of his estate.

But there was still not enough evidence connecting her directly to the crash.

Then Lucy remembered something.

"Mommy kept a little black machine from the car."

Police searched the attic room and found an old voice recorder hidden inside Lucy's stuffed rabbit.

The damaged recording captured Amelia confronting Vanessa.

Then came the sound of the collision.

Finally, Vanessa's voice emerged through the static.

"Make sure Daniel believes his wife is dead."
