The Beggar Girl Said My Dead Wife Was Alive

CHAPTER 4 — The Wedding That Became a Trap

Daniel refused to cancel the wedding.

Instead, he turned it into a trap.

Vanessa arrived at the cathedral believing she was about to become Mrs. Daniel Whitmore. Hundreds of guests watched her walk toward the man whose life she had stolen.

Daniel waited until she reached the altar.

Then he stepped away.

A screen descended behind him.

The recording began.

Amelia's voice filled the cathedral.

"I know you stole the money, Vanessa."

The crash followed.

Then Vanessa's command echoed through the room.

"Make sure Daniel believes his wife is dead."

Vanessa's flowers fell from her hands.

"This is fake."

Daniel displayed the forged death certificate, the returned letters, the sedatives and the financial records.

"You stole seven years from my wife."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You would have lost everything without me."

"I did lose everything."

Police officers entered through the side doors.

Vanessa tried to run, but Detective Grant blocked her path.

Before being arrested, Vanessa leaned close to Daniel.

"You think Amelia will forgive you? She'll never trust you again."

For once, Vanessa was telling the truth.

Daniel returned to the hospital, but Amelia's room was empty.

The bed had been stripped.

Lucy was gone.

A nurse handed him an envelope Amelia had left behind.

Inside was Daniel's old photograph and a brief note.

I believe you didn't write those letters. But believing you is not the same as feeling safe with you. Lucy and I need time.

Daniel searched the railway stations and airports, but Amelia had left no trace.

Then Detective Grant called.

Vanessa's brother had escaped police custody.

His vehicle had been recorded following Amelia's taxi away from the hospital.

Daniel looked again at Amelia's note.

A faint number was written beneath the final sentence.

It was the address of the house where Daniel and Amelia had spent their honeymoon.

And if Vanessa's brother understood Amelia's memories, he would know exactly where she was going.
