Celeste had arranged the humiliation.

Nathan promised to finance Ashcroft Hotels if Vanessa publicly rejected Adrian and announced her relationship with him before the press.

Vanessa had agreed to the first part.

She claimed she knew nothing about the stolen retirement money, but she admitted planning to embarrass Adrian.

"Why?" he asked.

Vanessa could barely look at him.

"Because my mother said people would laugh at me if I married a man without status."

"And you believed her."

"I was afraid she was right."

Adrian had seen fear create cruelty before. Understanding it did not excuse it.

He suspended the acquisition while investigators traced the missing funds.

Without Laurent's rescue agreement, Ashcroft Hotels had only weeks before bankruptcy.

Celeste blamed Adrian.

"He is punishing eight hundred workers because you rejected him."

Adrian responded by creating an emergency fund that paid employee salaries directly. He refused to give another dollar to the Ashcroft family.

Vanessa confronted her mother.

"You used me to steal from our employees."

"I protected this family."

"You protected our name."

Celeste revealed that Martin had known the company was failing but ignored the warning signs. Nathan offered an escape, and she took it.

Vanessa began cooperating with investigators.

Then security footage emerged from the night of the transfers.

It showed Vanessa entering the finance office and remaining inside for twenty-three minutes.

She had denied being there.

Adrian watched the footage in silence.

Vanessa explained that Celeste sent her to collect sealed documents. She never opened them, but she had lied because she feared appearing guilty.

"You still don't understand," Adrian said. "Every lie makes the next truth harder to believe."

The financial crimes unit prepared to arrest Vanessa.

Celeste refused to help her.

Nathan released a statement claiming Vanessa personally authorized the transfers.

As officers approached, Vanessa remembered the decorative security camera hidden inside the office clock.

Celeste believed it had been disconnected.

It had not.

Investigators recovered its audio.

The recording captured Celeste telling Nathan, "If this fails, Vanessa takes the blame."
