She Rejected Him—Then His Helicopter Arrive
CHAPTER 4 — The Daughter They Chose to Sacrifice
The recovered recording cleared Vanessa of planning the theft.
It did not erase her other choices.
At the emergency board meeting, Vanessa stood before the employees whose retirement money had disappeared.
She did not blame her mother for humiliating Adrian.
"I agreed to hurt someone because I was ashamed of an honest life. That decision was mine."
Then she played Celeste's recording.
Nathan had created false consulting contracts and transferred the stolen money through overseas accounts. Celeste expected Laurent International to replace the funds after the acquisition.
Martin had ignored irregularities because he did not want to admit his company was failing.
Celeste stood.
"Everything I did was for this family."
Vanessa looked at her mother.
"No. You did it so people would continue envying us."
Financial investigators arrested Celeste and Nathan.
Martin resigned from the company.
Adrian completed the acquisition under new conditions. The Ashcroft family lost control, but the employees kept their jobs and received shares in the restructured business.
Vanessa sold her jewelry, apartment and luxury car. Every dollar went into the retirement recovery fund.
After the meeting, she found Adrian alone in the ballroom where she had rejected him.
She returned the engagement ring.
"I loved you," she said. "But I loved being admired more."
Adrian took the box.
"Thank you for finally telling me the truth."
"Can you forgive me?"
"One day."
Hope appeared in her eyes.
"But forgiveness is not the same as trust."
Vanessa nodded.
She did not ask him to take her back.
As she walked away, Adrian opened the ring box.
Beneath the ring was a handwritten note.
If you ever ask again, let me become someone worthy first.
Adrian folded the note and placed it in his pocket.
For the first time, Vanessa left him without asking what his forgiveness could buy her.
