He Nearly Hit the Wrong Billionaire's Son

CHAPTER 1 - The Man in the Mercedes

The Mercedes missed Ethan by less than a foot.

His bicycle struck the pavement as his father shouted his name and ran toward him.

"I'm all right," Ethan whispered, although his hands were shaking.

The Mercedes stopped twenty yards away. Its rear window lowered, revealing a man in an expensive blue suit.

"Teach your boy where he should stay."

Jonah Reed looked at the tire mark beside his son's leg.

"You were speeding through a residential street."

The man laughed.

"And you're going to do what about it?"

Jonah recognized him.

Grant Mercer was the acting chief executive of Reed Transportation, the company Jonah had founded twenty years earlier. Grant was also married to Jonah's older sister, Rebecca.

Three years earlier, after Jonah's wife died, he had withdrawn from public life and allowed Grant to manage the company temporarily.

Grant apparently believed that meant Jonah had surrendered everything.

Jonah removed his phone and made a brief call.

Grant leaned through the window.

"Calling someone to save you?"

Jonah did not answer.

Minutes later, several black SUVs entered from both ends of the street and stopped around the Mercedes. Security officers stepped out, followed by Jonah's attorney and the company's head of internal investigations.

Ethan stared at them.

"Dad, who are they?"

"They work for the company that man is supposed to manage."

Grant's smile disappeared.

"You can't detain me."

"No one is detaining you. The police are already coming. My team is preserving evidence and making certain you don't drive away from an injured child."

Neighbors emerged from their homes. Several had recorded the incident on doorbell cameras.

Grant stepped out of the Mercedes.

"You disappeared for three years. You have no idea how that company works anymore."

Jonah lifted Ethan into his arms.

"I know enough to recognize a man who thinks a title places him above everyone else."

The attorney approached with a sealed folder.

"Mr. Reed, we completed the preliminary review you requested."

Grant became pale.

Jonah had begun investigating him before the accident.

The reckless driving had simply brought the confrontation into the open.

Inside the folder were unauthorized property purchases throughout the neighborhood.

Every purchase had been made through Reed Transportation.

And Grant's next target was the home Jonah's late wife had left to Ethan.
