The Nanny Smashed the Bottle to Save Him
CHAPTER 5 - A Place for Both Mothers
Noah recovered without permanent harm.
Isabel began therapy, not because a court required it, but because she understood that caring for herself was also a way of caring for her son.
Marta remained in the house.
However, their relationship changed.
Isabel stopped introducing her as "the nanny." She called Marta by her name and included her in decisions involving Noah.
"That does not make me part of the family," Marta warned.
"No," Isabel replied. "Everything you did when you had no obligation to stay is what makes you family."
Natalia accepted a legal agreement requiring psychological treatment, the return of stolen money and a permanent restriction preventing her from approaching Noah.
Months later, she wrote to Isabel.
She did not demand her old place in the family. Instead, she admitted that she had transformed the grief of being unable to have children into hatred toward the sister who could.
Isabel read the letter but did not answer immediately.
Forgiveness did not mean opening the door before she felt safe.
On Noah's first birthday, the mansion filled with relatives and friends. Isabel placed two chairs beside her son.
One was for her.
The other was for Marta.
Several guests appeared surprised to see an employee seated beside the owner of the house.
Isabel offered no explanation.
Marta had remained on the nursery floor with a swollen face while trying to save Noah. No surname or bank account could diminish that act.
Isabel later created a foundation supporting mothers experiencing postpartum depression and domestic workers falsely accused by powerful families.
Marta became director of its childcare program.
The woman who had entered the mansion as an employee now had the authority to protect other caregivers.
At the end of the birthday celebration, Isabel watched Marta rock Noah to sleep.
"Do you think you will ever forgive me completely?"
Marta smiled.
"I already forgave you. Now I am waiting for you to forgive yourself."
Isabel rested her head against Marta's shoulder.
A broken bottle had exposed one sister's betrayal.
But it also revealed a deeper truth.
Family was not always formed by the people who shared your blood.
Sometimes it was formed by the woman who stayed beside you even after you had been the first person to hurt her.
Isabel believed Marta had attacked her son, but she discovered that the nanny was the only woman willing to save them both.
