The House She Stole Belonged to the Child

CHAPTER 1 - The Girl on the Marble Floor

Richard Hale knew something was wrong the moment he opened the door.

His daughter was kneeling in soapy water.

Eight-year-old Lily gripped a yellow sponge with red, swollen fingers. Her blue dress was damp at the knees, and tears clung to her lashes.

Richard's briefcase fell from his hand.

Victoria stood nearby holding a glass of orange juice.

"She's just doing what she does best," she said.

Richard looked at the bucket, then at Lily's trembling hands.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria shrugged. "She spilled water on the rug. I'm teaching her responsibility."

Lily lowered her eyes.

Richard removed his phone.

"Cancel my entire schedule."

Victoria's smile disappeared. "What are you doing?"

He bent down and gently took the sponge from Lily. Then he dropped it into the bucket.

"Right now," he told his assistant.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Richard, you're overreacting. Children need discipline."

Richard turned toward her.

"This house is no longer yours."

"You can't be serious!"

"I have never been more serious."

He called his attorney, the family doctor, and Lily's maternal grandmother, Margaret. Then he asked the household security team to escort Victoria to a guest apartment until the situation was investigated.

Victoria's face turned pale.

"You cannot throw your wife out because a spoiled child doesn't like chores."

Richard looked at Lily.

"Did she make you do this before?"

Lily nodded.

"Every day when you were away."

Richard's chest tightened. His consulting work kept him overseas for weeks at a time. Victoria sent cheerful photographs and said Lily was adjusting beautifully after their marriage.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"She said you would send me away if I caused trouble."

Victoria protested, but Richard silenced her with one look.

Lily reached beneath her dress collar and removed a small brass key.

"She wanted this," she whispered. "Mommy told me never to give it away."

Richard recognized the key to his late wife's private archive.

Victoria had not been punishing Lily for spilling water; she had been forcing the child to reveal where her mother's documents were hidden.
