The House She Stole Belonged to the Child
CHAPTER 4 - A Father Must Earn Forgiveness
Victoria was charged with forgery, theft, financial fraud, and child endangerment.
The court issued a protective order preventing her from contacting Lily.
But legal consequences did not immediately repair the relationship between father and daughter.
Lily refused to sleep alone. She hid food beneath her pillow because Victoria had sometimes withheld dinner when she failed to finish her chores.
When Richard tried to comfort her, she turned toward Margaret.
That hurt, but he understood.
Love did not erase the months when Lily had needed him and he had not noticed.
Richard reduced his work schedule and began family counseling. He attended school meetings, prepared breakfast, and learned how Lily liked her hair braided.
Some mornings she trusted him.
Other mornings she asked whether he would leave again.
"I will have to travel sometimes," he told her honestly. "But you will always know where I am, when I'm returning, and who is staying with you."
Margaret moved into the guesthouse temporarily. She did not allow Richard to use guilt as a substitute for responsibility.
"You do not need to become a perfect father overnight," she said. "You need to become a dependable one every day."
The stolen jewelry was recovered from an auction house. Richard placed everything back in Lily's trust.
He also resigned from managing it alone. Margaret and an independent attorney became co-trustees.
At the custody hearing, Victoria's lawyer argued that Richard had created an unstable home.
Richard did not deny his failures.
"I was absent too often. I ignored warnings because I wanted to believe everything was fine. I cannot change that. I can only make certain my daughter is never silenced again."
The judge approved the protective arrangements and ordered continued counseling.
Outside the courtroom, Lily took Richard's hand.
"Are you still going to cancel your schedule?"
He crouched beside her.
"Whenever you truly need me."
She thought for a moment.
"Then come to my school play Friday."
Richard smiled through his tears.
"I'll be in the front row."
Lily squeezed his hand.
It was not complete forgiveness, but it was the first invitation she had given him back into her life.
