"You? In a Place Like This?" She Said Before the Manager Bowed

CHAPTER 3 - THE SISTER WHO LEFT

They met the next morning in a small diner two blocks from the harbor.

Elena chose the place because it was ordinary. She needed ordinary. Coffee cups. Scratched tables. A waitress who called everyone honey.

Daniel arrived alone.

Camila had called him all night, he admitted, but he had turned his phone off. He placed the old photograph on the table between them like something fragile.

"My adoptive mother died last year," he said. "I found papers after the funeral. My name used to be Mateo Cruz. I was six. There was a note saying I had to be taken away for my protection."

Elena wrapped both hands around her coffee. "Rosa Cruz was my sister."

Daniel looked stunned even though he must have expected it by then.

Elena told him what she had not said aloud in years. Rosa had worked as a bookkeeper for a marina owner in Seabrook. One night she came to Elena and their mother terrified, saying she had found proof of smuggling hidden in fake shipping invoices. The owner had threatened her. Two days later, Rosa vanished. The police called it theft and escape. Her drawer at work had been emptied. Some money was missing. The town decided the story for itself.

"Our mother never believed it," Elena said. She touched the pearls at her throat. "Neither did I."

Daniel opened his wallet and pulled out a folded paper. "I found this with the adoption records."

It was a note, faded and rushed.

If anything happens, tell Elena I did not leave him. I sent him away because they were watching the house.

Elena could not breathe for a moment.

"Why didn't she come back for you?" she whispered.

Daniel's eyes were wet. "Maybe she couldn't."

He slid one more item across the table. A key with a rusted brass tag.

Pier 8. Locker 214.

Before Elena could speak, a woman in a navy coat stopped beside their table.

She was older, maybe seventy, with tired eyes and a trembling mouth.

"I heard your name," she said to Daniel. "Mateo?"

Then she looked at Elena.

"I was Rosa's neighbor," she said. "And I lied to the police."
