"You? In a Place Like This?" She Said Before the Manager Bowed

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT THE PEARLS WERE FOR

Her name was Mrs. Aguilar.

Elena remembered her at once after the shock wore off. She had lived across from Rosa's apartment, always watering geraniums, always watching from her porch.

In the diner, Mrs. Aguilar sat down slowly and clasped her hands.

"I was afraid," she said. "The marina owner had men working for him. I saw Rosa that night. She wasn't running away. She was bleeding."

Elena felt cold all over.

Mrs. Aguilar went on. Rosa had come to her door carrying a little boy and a canvas bag. She said the boy had seen too much and had to be sent away first. She begged Mrs. Aguilar to say nothing until morning. But by sunrise, Rosa was gone, and a man from the marina was already asking questions.

"So you told the police she left?" Elena asked.

The older woman nodded, ashamed. "I told myself I was protecting my own children."

Daniel looked down at the rusted key.

They drove to Pier 8 together that afternoon. The harbor smelled of salt and diesel. Locker 214 was in a row of old metal storage boxes scheduled for demolition. Elena's hands trembled so badly Daniel had to steady the key for her.

Inside was a canvas bag, water-stained but intact.

There were ledgers from the marina.

A cassette tape.

And a letter addressed in Rosa's hand: Elena.

Elena read it standing in the wind. Rosa had discovered illegal shipments and payments to a local official. She had hidden the records. She had sent Mateo away because his father, a dockworker who had been helping her, had been killed after threatening to talk. Rosa wrote that if she survived, she would come back. If she didn't, Elena must clear both their names.

At the bottom was one final line.

The pearls are not for beauty. Sell them if you must. Use them to finish what I started.

Elena touched the necklace with shaking fingers.

Those pearls had never been vanity.

They had been a plan.

Then Daniel lifted the cassette tape and turned it over.

On the label were three words that changed everything again:

Statement of Chief Warren Hale.

The police chief who had closed Rosa's case was still alive.

And he was now Camila Reyes's grandfather.
