Emma’s Daughter Came in the Rain

CHAPTER 3 - What Emma Never Told Her

The man in the dark coat was Dr. Adrian Vale, and he was not a stranger to Clara. He had once worked for her husband's foundation, years ago, back when her life still felt orderly.

"You have no legal authority here," Adrian said.

Clara laughed once, without humor. "Then explain why my daughter is in a hallway bed with a man hovering over her like a threat."

Emma gripped the blanket. "Clara, listen to me. I didn't come back because I was sick. I came back because I found something."

She told them in pieces.

The fire had not taken everything. Emma had survived, badly burned and frightened, and a nurse had helped her leave town under another name. She had spent years believing her mother had chosen not to look for her. Only when her own daughter began asking questions did Emma start searching again.

Maddie reached into her backpack and pulled out a folded envelope. "I found this in Mom's coat."

Inside was a copy of an old clinic transfer form, stamped with the date of the fire. Across the bottom was a signature Clara knew too well.

Julian Whitmore.

Her husband.

Clara stared at the paper.

"He signed away your treatment?" she asked.

Emma shook her head. "He signed to move me. Away from the city. Away from you."

Before Clara could speak, Adrian stepped closer.

"Mrs. Whitmore," he said quietly, "your husband has been requesting copies of Emma's records for three weeks. He says he's her guardian."

Clara's stomach twisted. "He can't be."

Emma looked at her, exhausted. "Mom, I was told you wanted nothing to do with me."

The words landed like a slap.

Clara thought of every year she had mourned a child she never buried, every birthday left unlit.

"Who told you that?" she asked.

Emma did not answer.

Maddie did.

"The man in the black gloves."
