Emma’s Daughter Came in the Rain

CHAPTER 4 - The Fire Came From the Inside

By morning, Clara had gone home for the first time in hours and found Julian in his study, calm as ever, as if none of this touched him.

He looked at the music box and did not deny knowing it.

"You kept that," he said.

"Why did you tell Emma I abandoned her?"

He leaned back in his chair. "Because the truth would have destroyed what was left of this family."

Clara's hands trembled. "You let me believe my daughter was dead."

"Your daughter was unstable after the fire. She needed distance. So did you."

That was the first lie. Clara had heard enough lies in her marriage to know the sound of one.

Emma had not disappeared by choice. She had been moved, hidden, and cut off by the man Clara had trusted most.

Adrian arrived with more records. The treatment transfer papers. A private memo. A note from a clinic administrator.

And a photo.

It showed the hotel from years ago, the same hotel where Clara now stood, with a man in the doorway carrying a fuel can.

Julian went still.

"It wasn't an accident," Adrian said.

Maddie, sitting on the sofa with a blanket around her shoulders, looked up sharply. "You mean the fire?"

Emma's voice was barely there. "He told me if I came back, he'd take my child."

Clara turned slowly toward Julian.

"You threatened your own daughter?"

"I protected this family," he snapped. "She was going to expose things that would ruin us."

"Us?" Clara said. "You mean you."

For the first time, Julian lost control.

He admitted enough. There had been an argument that night. Emma had found evidence of financial theft from a charity fund tied to the family name. Julian had tried to take the papers. The fire had started when a lamp fell in the struggle. He had hidden the truth, moved Emma, and built a story around her disappearance.

Clara felt sick.

But the worst part was not the theft.

It was what he had done after.

He had watched her grieve their daughter for twenty-four years.

"You are not taking her again," Clara said.

Julian stood. "Try to stop me."

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen, and for the first time that night, fear crossed his face.

It was the hospital.

Maddie had vanished.
