A Mother, a Maid, and the Daughter Taken From Her

CHAPTER 1 - THE ANNOUNCEMENT

"My empire goes to my true daughter."

Under the crystal chandeliers of the old Baroque ballroom, every conversation died at once.

At seventy-six, Beatrice still had the kind of presence that made people obey before they understood why.

Behind her, Celeste smiled too soon.

"Thank you, Mother."

Beatrice did not even look at her at first.

Then she turned.

"Not you."

A shock ran through the room. Someone near the champagne tower dropped a glass.

At the far edge of the ballroom, where the staff had been trained to stand still and invisible, Elena Ruiz froze with a tray in her hands.

Beatrice lifted one trembling finger and pointed straight at her.

"Her."

Elena's breath stopped. "Me?"

Beatrice crossed the marble floor and wrapped both arms around her. For one stiff second Elena did not move. T

Behind them, Celeste's voice rose into a scream.

"What are you doing? Then who am I?"

Guests began whispering hard enough to sound like rain.

Beatrice pulled back, her blue eyes wet but unyielding. From inside her evening bag, she took out a brown envelope and held it high.

On the front, in block letters, were two words:

DNA RESULTS.

"You are a fraud. The DNA results prove it."

Celeste stared at the envelope, then at Elena.

And instead of denying it, she whispered, "You weren't supposed to open that."
