A Mother, a Maid, and the Daughter Taken From Her

CHAPTER 3 - MARTA'S CONFESSION

Marta had worked in the Laurent houses for thirty-four years.

Elena knew her as strict, organized, impossible to impress. She had taught Elena how Beatrice liked the silver polished, where the winter linen was kept, how to cross a ballroom without ever drawing attention. Elena had never seen her hands shake before.

Beatrice's voice went cold. "Say what you came to say."

Marta looked at Elena, not at her employer. "Your mother Rosa was my cousin."

The room tilted.

Elena sat down because she had to.

Marta twisted a handkerchief in both hands. "Years ago, Rosa worked at the clinic in Spain for six months. She came home with a baby and a story. She said a dying relative had begged her to take the child. I knew she was lying, but she made me swear not to ask."

Elena pressed both palms to her skirt. "My mother loved me."

"I know," Marta said, tears in her eyes. "She loved you fiercely. That part was always true."

Beatrice leaned forward. "Did Rosa steal my child?"

Marta flinched. "No. Not alone."

Harrow looked up sharply.

Marta took a breath that seemed to hurt. "There was another nurse. Her name was Ines Valera. She had lost a baby days before. The clinic covered mistakes, mixed records, made side arrangements for wealthy families who wanted healthy newborns, no questions asked. Ines took your daughter. Rosa found out after. She was terrified the police would blame them both. So she ran with the baby."

Elena felt sick. "Why didn't my mother tell me?"

"Because by then," Marta whispered, "you were hers in every way that mattered."

Beatrice's face remained hard, but pain flickered across it like a shadow. "And Celeste?"

Marta lowered her eyes. "Celeste is Ines Valera's daughter. Ines got close to your household years later as a nurse to Beatrice's late husband. She saw an opportunity. She placed Celeste where your daughter should have been."

Elena stared at Beatrice. "You raised the daughter of the woman who took me?"

"Yes," Beatrice said. "Without knowing it."

Footsteps sounded in the hall.

Then Celeste's voice came through the half-open door.

"If we're finally telling the truth," she said, "you should know I came here tonight to stop Elena from ever learning who she was."

"Your mother loved you. That part was always true."

Celeste stepped inside holding a second envelope, yellowed with age.

Across the front, in faded ink, Elena saw one word:

Rosa.
