He Heard His Daughter Crying—Then Canceled the Wedding

Chapter 1 - The Boy in the Street
The stone struck the headlight with a violent crack.
Daniel Whitmore slammed on the brakes as his black SUV skidded across the wet street. Before his driver could react, Daniel threw open the door and stepped into the rain.
"What is wrong with you?!" he demanded.
The boy standing near the curb could not have been older than seven. His gray shirt was torn, his cheek was bruised, and rainwater ran through his unwashed brown hair.
Yet he did not run.
"You left us!" the boy cried. "My mom is very sick!"
Daniel's anger faltered.
"What's your mother's name?"
The boy reached into his pocket and removed a photograph with a torn edge. Daniel took it reluctantly.
Then his entire body went still.
The picture had been taken eight years earlier. Daniel was sitting beneath the oak tree at his family's lake house, holding his infant niece. Beside him stood the woman he had intended to marry.
Emily Carter.
Daniel slowly crouched until he was level with the boy.
"Emily..." Her name broke in his throat. "Tell me, where is she now?"
The boy stared at him with wounded blue eyes that looked disturbingly familiar.
"At Saint Matthew's shelter," he whispered. "She couldn't wake up this morning."
Daniel's face lost all color.
"What is your name?"
"Noah Carter."
"And your father?"
Noah's chin trembled.
"Mom said my father was a good man once. She said maybe he never knew about me."
Daniel looked again at the photograph. Taped to its back was a faded hospital bracelet.
Baby Noah Whitmore.
His hands began to shake.
Daniel had spent eight years believing Emily had abandoned him without explanation. Now her child was standing before him, hungry and homeless, carrying his last name on a hospital bracelet.
And for the first time, Daniel realized Emily had never left him alone - she had left carrying his son.
