He Heard His Daughter Crying—Then Canceled the Wedding

Chapter 2 - The Woman He Never Forgot

Daniel lifted Noah into the SUV and ordered his driver to go directly to Saint Matthew's.

During the ride, Noah guarded a paper bag containing half a sandwich.

"It's for Mom," he explained. "She always says she isn't hungry, but I know she's lying."

The words cut Daniel more deeply than the broken headlight ever could.

At the shelter, a volunteer led them to a narrow room. Emily lay unconscious beneath a thin blanket. Her once-bright auburn hair framed a pale, exhausted face.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

Eight years disappeared.

He remembered her dancing barefoot in his kitchen. He remembered the engagement ring hidden in his desk. Most painfully, he remembered the letter that had arrived the morning she vanished.

I cannot live in your world. Do not look for me.

He had searched anyway, until his mother produced documents showing Emily had accepted money to disappear.

Daniel approached the bed.

"Emily?"

Her eyes slowly opened. When she saw him, fear replaced confusion.

"Noah," she whispered. "What did you do?"

"I stopped his car," Noah admitted.

Emily tried to sit up, but pain seized her chest. Daniel caught her shoulders.

"Don't touch me," she said weakly.

"Why didn't you tell me about our son?"

A bitter tear slipped down her cheek.

"I did. I wrote to you every week. Your mother returned every letter."

Daniel froze.

Emily explained that Eleanor Whitmore had visited her while Daniel was overseas negotiating a merger. She claimed Daniel had chosen his family empire over an "inconvenient pregnancy." She showed Emily a signed settlement and threatened to destroy the small business belonging to Emily's widowed mother.

"I refused her money," Emily said. "But she made certain you never received my messages."

A doctor entered with test results. Emily needed urgent heart surgery. Without it, she might have only weeks.

Daniel reached for his phone.

Then Emily gave him one final warning.

"Your mother knows Noah found you. The shelter called her office this morning."

Footsteps sounded outside the room.

Eleanor Whitmore had arrived - and she had not come to apologize.
