The Robber Didn't Know the Boy Was His Son

CHAPTER 1 - The Boy Who Called the Robber Dad

Three masked men stormed into Westbridge Bank.

Customers screamed and dropped to the marble floor.

"Everybody down! Keep your heads low!"

The tallest robber stood in the center of the lobby. His name was Ethan Cole, but nobody inside was supposed to know that.

Ethan had never been a criminal.

He was a construction foreman, a husband, and the father of six-year-old Lily, who was waiting in a hospital for life-saving heart surgery.

The hospital required a large payment before a specialist would perform the procedure. Ethan had sold his truck, tools, and everything his family could spare.

It was not enough.

That morning, doctors warned him that Lily might not survive another week.

Desperation brought him to the bank.

Ethan ordered the frightened customers to remain down.

Then an eight-year-old boy rose from the floor.

The child had dark brown curls and familiar gray eyes. He wore a green corduroy jacket and carried an old photograph in his pocket.

"You should leave," the boy said. "Right now."

Ethan turned toward him.

"This is your last warning."

The boy did not move.

His mother, Sarah, reached for him.

"Oliver, come back!"

Ethan froze when he heard her voice.

Sarah Mitchell.

The woman he had loved nine years earlier.

The woman who disappeared without saying goodbye.

Sarah looked at the masked robber, but she did not recognize him.

Oliver did.

He had spent years studying the old photograph his mother kept hidden inside a wooden box. It showed Sarah standing beside a younger Ethan.

Oliver took out the picture.

"My mother said this man was my father."

Ethan stared at it.

The photograph had been taken shortly before Sarah vanished.

"You don't know what you're talking about," he said.

Oliver studied the robber's eyes.

"You have the same eyes. And the same scar beside your thumb."

Ethan looked down at the small scar on his hand.

Sarah's face slowly turned pale.

"Ethan?"

One of the other robbers grabbed his shoulder.

"We came for the money. Forget them."

But Ethan could no longer move.

He looked at Oliver and calculated the years.

Eight years old.

Sarah had disappeared nine years earlier.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.

Tears filled Sarah's eyes.

"I tried."

Before she could explain, the third robber pointed his weapon at Oliver.

"No more family stories."

Ethan stepped between them.

Then Oliver spoke the words that changed everything.

"You came here to save your daughter, but did you know you also had a son?"
