The Robber Didn't Know the Boy Was His Son

CHAPTER 3 - The Wife Who Refused to Blame Sarah

At the hospital, Grace sat beside Lily's bed and watched the bank robbery unfold on television.

When the cameras captured Ethan removing his mask, Grace's heart stopped.

She recognized her husband.

Then the news reported that Ethan was speaking to an unidentified woman and child inside the bank.

Grace called Diane.

"Did Ethan have another child?"

Diane became silent.

That silence answered everything.

"You knew," Grace said.

"I protected him from a woman who would have ruined his future."

"You stole his son."

Diane insisted that Sarah had been unsuitable and that Oliver was better off away from the Cole family.

Grace ended the call.

She did not blame Sarah.

She did not blame Oliver.

She blamed the woman who had decided that wealth gave her ownership over everyone else's life.

Inside the bank, Victor ordered Ethan to fill another bag with money.

Ethan refused.

Police had promised that hostages would be protected if the robbers surrendered.

Victor knew that surrender meant prison.

He grabbed Oliver and pressed a weapon against his shoulder.

Sarah screamed.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Take me instead."

"You're already going to prison."

"Then you have nothing to lose by letting him go."

Oliver trembled but kept his eyes on Ethan.

"Is Lily going to die?"

Ethan's voice broke.

"I'm trying to stop that."

"Then don't die before she wakes up."

Victor ordered Ethan to move back.

Instead, Sarah struck Victor's arm. Oliver broke free and ran.

Victor fired.

Ethan threw himself between the weapon and the boy.

The bullet struck Ethan's shoulder.

Police entered through the side security door seconds later. Victor and the third robber were arrested.

Ethan collapsed on the marble floor.

Oliver knelt beside him.

"Dad?"

It was the first time he had used the word.

Ethan opened his eyes.

"I don't deserve that yet."

Oliver grabbed his hand.

"Then stay alive and earn it."

Paramedics rushed Ethan toward the ambulance.

Sarah followed with Oliver.

At the hospital entrance, they met Grace.

The two women stared at each other.

Sarah expected anger.

Instead, Grace embraced Oliver.

"You must be Lily's brother."

Sarah began to cry.

Grace turned toward Ethan's stretcher.

"I love my husband," she said. "But what he did was wrong."

Sarah nodded.

"What his mother did was wrong too."

Grace took Sarah's hand.

"Then we tell the truth about all of it."

A doctor approached them.

Lily's condition had suddenly worsened. Her surgery could not be delayed.

The stolen money had been recovered and returned to the bank.

They still had no way to pay.

Then Diane appeared in the hospital corridor.

She held the keys to her mansion.

"I'll sell everything."

Grace looked directly at her.

"You should have helped before your son became desperate enough to wear a mask."

Diane lowered her head.

"I know."

Sarah stepped between Diane and Oliver.

"You don't get near my son until he chooses it."

Diane accepted the boundary.

For the first time, nobody allowed her money to control the family.

Then the surgeon returned with another problem.

The specialist was ready, but Lily's heart was weakening rapidly.

They had found the money, but they might already be too late to save her.
