She Was Breathing Inside the Coffin
CHAPTER 2 — The Son Emily Never Forgot
Doctors placed Emily on life support.
Tests revealed a powerful sedative in her blood. It had slowed her breathing and heartbeat until both became almost impossible to detect without proper hospital equipment.
The physician who declared her dead, Dr. Nathan Cole, had disappeared.
Richard sat outside intensive care with Finn beside him.
“How did you know my daughter?”
Finn lowered his head.
“She came looking for me.”
Nine years earlier, eighteen-year-old Emily had given birth to a son. Frightened and alone, she agreed to an open adoption after Richard threatened to cut her off if she brought “scandal” into the family.
Finn was raised by Sean and Nora Gallagher, a loving couple who sent Emily letters and photographs.
Victoria intercepted most of them.
After Sean and Nora died in an accident, Finn entered foster care. Emily discovered what had happened only three months earlier.
She began visiting him and petitioned for custody.
“She said she was sorry it took so long,” Finn explained. “She said she never stopped loving me.”
Richard’s voice broke.
“You’re Emily’s son?”
Finn nodded.
Richard realized the child who had just saved Emily was his grandson—the grandson he had once pressured her to surrender.
Two days before the funeral, Emily had asked Finn to meet her at a private clinic. She said she had discovered evidence that someone was stealing money from the Whitmore family trust.
Finn arrived late and hid when he saw Victoria arguing with Dr. Cole.
Through a partly open door, he saw Emily unconscious on a bed.
The doctor said her pulse was too weak to detect.
Victoria answered, “Then sign the certificate.”
Finn watched them move Emily to the clinic morgue. When he saw her hand twitch beneath the sheet, he ran for help.
No adult believed him.
He escaped his foster placement on the morning of the funeral and followed the address printed in an online obituary.
Richard covered his face.
Emily had tried to warn him about Victoria for months.
He had dismissed every accusation as jealousy.
A detective approached carrying Emily’s recovered phone.
Her final unsent message was addressed to Richard.
Victoria has been stealing from Mom’s trust. If anything happens to me, do not believe Dr. Cole.
Beneath it was a photograph of financial records.
One transfer had been authorized that morning.
While Emily lay inside her coffin, Victoria had moved twelve million dollars into a private account.
