She Was Breathing Inside the Coffin

CHAPTER 3 — The Wife Who Planned Two Funerals

Emily’s late mother had left her controlling shares in Whitmore Medical Holdings.

The shares would transfer to Emily on her twenty-eighth birthday, three weeks away.

Until then, Richard managed them as trustee.

If Emily died before her birthday, the shares would remain under Richard’s control—and Victoria held his financial power of attorney.

Emily had discovered that Victoria used forged signatures to steal from the trust. Dr. Cole helped conceal fraudulent payments through his private clinic.

Richard had refused to believe it.

“Victoria supported me after Emily’s mother died,” he told the detectives.

Finn looked at him quietly.

“Emily said bad people can be kind when they need something.”

The child’s words hurt more than any accusation.

Police found Victoria at a private airfield. Inside her luggage were cash, forged passports and medication prescribed in Richard’s name.

She claimed the medicine was for his anxiety.

Investigators disagreed.

Messages between Victoria and Dr. Cole revealed a second plan. After Emily’s burial, Richard was supposed to suffer a fatal “heart attack.” Victoria would inherit his estate and control the company.

Dr. Cole was arrested the following evening.

Faced with the possibility of life in prison, he confessed.

Victoria had slipped the sedative into Emily’s tea during a meeting. Cole then falsified the examination and demanded a closed, immediate funeral.

Emily had awakened briefly in the clinic.

Finn had not imagined her moving.

She had tried to reach for him.

Meanwhile, child services investigated Finn’s foster placement. His foster guardian had taken the survivor benefits left by Sean and Nora while providing him with barely enough food.

Richard offered to bring Finn to the Whitmore estate.

The boy refused.

“You didn’t want me when I was born.”

Richard did not defend himself.

“You’re right.”

For the first time, he admitted that protecting the family’s reputation had mattered more to him than protecting his frightened daughter.

He arranged a safe temporary home with Emily’s aunt, Margaret, a retired teacher Finn had already met during Emily’s custody visits.

Then he returned to the hospital.

Emily’s heart rate was strengthening, but she remained unconscious.

Richard took her hand.

“I failed you when you were eighteen,” he whispered. “Please wake up and give me the chance to tell you the truth.”

Emily’s fingers moved.

Her eyes remained closed, but one word escaped her lips.

“Finn.”
