CHAPTER 1 - The Woman Who Entered With a Baby

The ballroom doors opened during Adrian Vale's family gala.

A young woman in a torn beige dress stumbled inside, clutching a sleeping infant against her chest. Mud covered her face, and blood marked one knee.

She pointed toward Adrian.

"It was you that night."

Her finger appeared aimed at him, but her furious eyes were fixed on Camila Torres, the elegant woman gripping Adrian's arm.

The guests fell silent.

Camila recovered first.

"She is lying. Do not listen to her!"

The stranger tightened her hold on the baby.

"You left this child in the trash."

Camila shouted for security.

Adrian broke free from her hand.

"Wait. Let me see the child."

The young woman hesitated before pulling back the blanket.

A pale scar crossed the baby's arm. Below it was a distinctive birthmark shaped like a falling star.

Adrian's face collapsed.

"My God. It is true."

The infant was Sophia, his four-month-old daughter.

That afternoon, Dr. Marcus Hale had told Adrian that Sophia died following complications from heart surgery. He had not been permitted to see her body. Camila claimed infection-control rules required immediate transfer to a funeral facility.

She then persuaded him to attend the company gala, insisting that canceling it would create dangerous rumors about the Vale Group.

Now Sophia was breathing in another woman's arms.

Adrian reached for his daughter, but the stranger stepped back.

"Not until the police arrive."

Camila rushed toward the doors. Two guests stopped her while Adrian called emergency services.

"My name is Mara Ellis," the young woman said. "I work in the laundry department at Saint Catherine's Clinic."

She looked at Camila.

"I saw her place the baby inside a medical-waste container less than an hour ago."

Camila began screaming that Mara was a kidnapper.

Mara reached into her pocket and removed Sophia's hospital bracelet.

The identification number matched the records on Adrian's phone.

But another detail appeared beneath the baby's name.

The bracelet had been marked "deceased" forty minutes before Sophia was abandoned.

Someone had declared Adrian's daughter dead while her heart was still beating.
