CHAPTER 4 - The Wife Who Never Received Her Warning

Natalie's death was reopened.

Hospital logs showed that Camila used Dr. Hale's credentials to enter Natalie's room. A nurse remembered finding an unlabeled vial beside the bed, but Hale ordered her to discard it.

The evidence could not prove that Camila caused the original hemorrhage.

It proved she delayed the emergency treatment that might have saved Natalie.

Hale confessed that Camila wanted Natalie silenced before she exposed the stolen funds.

Camila was charged with conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder, and criminally negligent homicide.

During the trial, her attorneys argued that she loved Adrian and merely wanted to protect the Vale family from scandal.

Adrian testified against her.

"You did not love me," he said. "You studied my grief and used it as a door into my home."

Camila looked toward Sophia, who sat safely with Natalie's sixty-two-year-old mother, Eleanor.

"Everything I did was for our future."

"There was never an 'our.' There was only what you wanted to own."

Camila and Dr. Hale were convicted. Their seized assets were used to repay the Vale Group and compensate families affected by the clinic's falsified records.

Mara received a public commendation, but returning to ordinary life was difficult. Her landlord had thrown away her belongings, and the clinic terminated her before it closed.

Adrian offered her a room in his mansion.

She refused.

"I saved Sophia because she needed me. I will not become another person who depends on your family."

Eleanor understood.

She helped Mara secure an apartment and complete the nursing education she had abandoned years earlier to support her sick mother.

Adrian did not hire Mara as a nanny. He did not turn gratitude into control.

Instead, he asked whether she wanted to remain in Sophia's life.

Mara agreed to become her godmother.

Months later, Adrian opened Natalie's safe-deposit box. Inside were photographs, financial records, and letters for Sophia's future birthdays.

At the bottom was a final envelope addressed to Mara Ellis.

Mara stared at her own name.

She had never met Natalie.

Somehow, before her death, Natalie had known exactly which woman would one day be asked to save her child.
