The Name Inside the Ring

Chapter 3: The Hospital Room

Victoria took Lily to her car and drove straight to the hospital.

Lily sat in the passenger seat, silent and tense, still holding the basket of roses. She did not cry. That worried Victoria more than tears would have. A child who knew when to stay quiet had already learned too much about danger.

"How old are you?" Victoria asked.

"Nine."

Victoria tightened her hands on the wheel.

Anna had disappeared ten years ago.

Their father had told everyone Anna had run away with a criminal, stolen money from the family trust, and died somewhere overseas. Victoria had believed him because grief made belief easier than doubt.

Now she wondered how much of her life had been built on lies.

At the hospital, Lily led her to a private ward at the back, one that looked too clean and too quiet. A nurse at the desk saw Victoria and immediately reached for the phone.

Victoria leaned over the counter.

"Do not call anyone."

The nurse froze.

Lily opened the door to Room 14.

Inside, a thin woman lay in bed, pale and weak, her dark hair spread across the pillow.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Anna.

Older. Sick. But alive.

Anna opened her eyes.

For a moment, the sisters only stared at each other.

Then Anna whispered, "You still wear it."

Victoria looked down at the golden rose ring.

"I thought you were dead."

Anna's eyes filled. "I thought you chose not to find me."

Victoria crossed the room and took her hand.

"Who did this?"

Anna tried to answer, but the machines beside her began beeping faster.

Lily ran to her mother's side.

"Mom?"

Anna gripped Victoria's hand with sudden strength.

"Father needed an heir he could control," Anna whispered. "When I refused, he erased me."

Victoria went still.

"What does Lily have to do with it?"

Anna's eyes moved to her daughter.

"She is not just my child."

Before Victoria could ask what that meant, the hospital lights flickered.

A voice came through the room speaker.

"Victoria. Step away from the girl."

It was their father.
