The Name Inside the Ring
Chapter 4: The Rosewood Lie
Victoria locked the hospital room door and moved Lily behind her.
The voice from the speaker remained calm.
"I see Anna has filled your head with old fantasies."
Victoria looked around the room and noticed the camera hidden above the cabinet. She had grown up in Rosewood House. She knew her father's style. He never entered a room without owning the exits first.
"You told me she was dead," Victoria said.
"I told you what you needed to believe."
Anna struggled to sit up. "You stole ten years from us."
Their father's voice hardened. "I protected the family."
Victoria laughed once. "From your own daughter?"
"From weakness."
The door handle rattled.
Someone was trying to get in.
Lily clutched Victoria's sleeve.
Anna whispered, "The ring."
Victoria looked at her.
Anna nodded weakly. "Open it."
Victoria twisted the ruby at the center of the rose ring. For years, she had thought it was only decoration. Now the flower clicked open, revealing a tiny folded strip of film inside.
Anna said, "Your mother hid records before she died. Father thought the ring was only jewelry."
Victoria's hands shook as she unfolded it.
Names.
Transfers.
Birth records.
Trust documents.
Then she saw Lily's name.
Lily Rosewood.
Legal heir to the original Rosewood estate.
Victoria understood.
Their father had not hidden Anna because of shame. He had hidden her because Anna's child had inherited what he could not legally control.
The door burst open.
Two security men stepped inside.
Then a nurse screamed from the hallway.
Police officers rushed in behind them.
A man in a dark suit followed.
Anna looked at him with relief.
"Daniel."
Victoria stared.
Daniel Mercer had once been Anna's fiancé, the man their father accused of ruining her.
Daniel looked at Victoria and held up his badge.
"I have been looking for them for ten years," he said.
Then he turned to Lily.
"And for my daughter."
