Whose Kids Are Those?
Chapter 5: What She Came to Claim
Margaret tried to deny everything.
Arthur did not let her.
Years earlier, Daniel's late father had created a trust protecting any future children Daniel might have. Margaret had hidden the document because it prevented her from controlling the estate.
When she learned Olivia was pregnant, she arranged the forged custody papers before the twins were born.
She did not only want Olivia gone.
She wanted the children legally erased.
Arthur had discovered the fraud after Vanessa requested access to the trust for her supposed unborn baby. The conflicting documents exposed the entire scheme.
Police arrived before the guests left.
Vanessa confessed in exchange for a reduced charge. Margaret was arrested for fraud, forgery, coercion, and conspiracy to interfere with parental rights.
Daniel stood beside the broken champagne glass and watched his old life disappear.
Olivia prepared to leave.
"Please," he said. "Give me a chance."
She looked at him carefully.
"A chance to do what?"
"Know them."
Rose hid behind her mother's coat.
Lily stared at him with quiet suspicion.
Daniel lowered himself to their level.
"I don't expect you to call me Dad."
Lily asked, "Did you know about us?"
"No."
"Would you have wanted us?"
Daniel's eyes filled.
"More than anything."
Olivia watched his face but did not rescue him from the moment.
Lily looked at her mother.
"Can he visit sometime?"
Olivia was silent for a long time.
"Maybe."
That single word was more than Daniel deserved.
Over the following year, he did not try to buy forgiveness. He attended school events, learned their favorite foods, and listened when they asked painful questions. He sold the estate and placed the girls' inheritance in independent trusts.
Olivia built a life that did not depend on him.
Slowly, Daniel became part of it.
Not as her husband.
Not yet.
But as the father their daughters chose to know.
One afternoon, Rose handed him a drawing.
It showed Olivia, Lily, Rose, the baby, and Daniel standing beneath a large tree.
Daniel smiled through tears.
"Who's this?" he asked, pointing to himself.
Rose answered simply.
"That's the man who came back."
Across the garden, Olivia heard her.
She did not smile.
But she did not look away either.
