The Teddy Bear Held Her Mother's Secret

CHAPTER 4 - The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Jonathan immediately ordered the staff to gather in the main hall.

One person was missing.

Mrs. Bell, Caroline's private governess, had worked for the family since Emily's death. Jonathan trusted her completely.

Luna ran upstairs.

Caroline's bedroom was empty.

The balcony door stood open.

Jonathan found Mrs. Bell leading Caroline toward a service gate at the back of the estate. Caroline was crying and trying to pull away.

Luna reached them first.

She placed herself between Caroline and the governess.

Mrs. Bell claimed she was taking the child somewhere safe.

Then Caroline pointed at the woman's coat pocket.

"She took Mommy's letter."

Security found Emily's original letter, Caroline's medicine, and a second phone inside the pocket.

Mrs. Bell had been reporting Caroline's conversations to Vanessa for years. She also prevented Jonathan from receiving messages from teachers, doctors, and household employees.

She was arrested for attempted kidnapping, child endangerment, and conspiracy.

That evening, Evelyn returned to the ballroom.

The guests were still waiting for an explanation. Many expected the Ashford family to hide the scandal.

Instead, Evelyn walked onto the stage.

For decades, she had allowed Jonathan and his executives to manage the company while she avoided public attention. Vanessa assumed an older widow would never challenge them.

She was wrong.

Evelyn owned the deciding shares in the Ashford Group.

"The engagement is canceled," she announced. "The planned hotel sale is also canceled. Every employee account will be independently examined."

Jonathan joined her on the stage.

He publicly confirmed the pension theft and promised that every stolen payment would be restored using the criminals' seized assets and his own dividends.

Vanessa, Felix, Mrs. Bell, and the mechanic were charged.

Months later, Vanessa was also charged with arranging Emily's death. Felix's testimony, the garage video, the brake hose, and Teresa's recording connected every part of the plan.

Jonathan apologized to Luna.

"You protected my daughter while I was too distracted to see that she needed protection."

Luna shook her head.

"Caroline doesn't need another expensive promise. She needs you to come home."

Jonathan looked across the room.

Caroline was asleep on a sofa, holding the repaired teddy bear.

Beside her lay Emily's final letter.

Its last sentence was addressed to him.

Do not let grief turn you into a stranger to our daughter.

Jonathan had caught the people who threatened Caroline. Now he had to prove that he could become the father she needed.
