CHAPTER 5 - The Family Caroline Chose
Jonathan stepped down as chief executive for one year.
For the first time, he took Caroline to school, prepared her breakfast, and stayed home when she had nightmares.
Trust did not return immediately.
Caroline still ran to Luna whenever she heard raised voices. She still hid food beneath her pillow because Mrs. Bell had punished her by withholding dinner.
Jonathan did not demand forgiveness.
He attended family counseling and followed the routines that made Caroline feel safe.
Luna stopped working as a maid.
Evelyn paid for her to complete the childcare and counseling course she had abandoned while caring for her sick mother. Luna later became the director of a new program supporting children affected by family fraud and coercive control.
She remained part of Caroline's life, but not as an employee who could be dismissed without warning.
Caroline called her "Mommy Luna" when she was frightened and simply "Luna" at other times.
No one corrected her.
Vanessa was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, child endangerment, and theft. Felix and the mechanic also received prison sentences. Mrs. Bell was convicted for her role in the attempted kidnapping.
The stolen pension money was returned.
Evelyn created an independent employee board so one family could never control the fund again.
One year after the gala, Jonathan held a small birthday dinner for Caroline.
There were no reporters or business partners.
Only family, friends, and several former employees who had helped expose the truth.
Caroline wore a simple lavender dress and carried her repaired teddy bear.
Jonathan knelt beside her.
"Last year, you said you chose Luna."
Caroline looked worried.
"Are you still angry?"
"No. You chose the person who made you feel safe. You were braver than every adult in that room."
Luna sat beside Evelyn at the table.
Caroline took Jonathan's hand with one hand and Luna's with the other.
"Can I choose both of you?"
Jonathan smiled through his tears.
"You never should have needed to choose."
Before cutting the cake, Caroline opened the small pocket Evelyn had sewn into the teddy bear.
Inside were two photographs.
One showed Caroline as a baby in Emily's arms.
The other showed Jonathan, Evelyn, Luna, and Caroline together.
Caroline carefully returned both photographs to the pocket. She placed the teddy bear on the chair beside her, closed her eyes, and made a wish.
"What did you wish for?" Luna asked.
Caroline looked at Jonathan, then at Luna.
"I can't tell you. It won't come true."
Jonathan lit the candles again after the wind from the open window blew them out.
This time, Caroline asked everyone to stand closer.
Then she took a deep breath and blew out all six candles.
