The Fake Bag Exposed Her Real Family
CHAPTER 2 - One Father, Two Families
Nobody spoke.
Daniel Mercer recovered first.
"This is not the place for old accusations."
Laura stepped toward him.
"You disappeared when Mia was six. You never called her again."
Chloe looked at Mia.
"Your mother is lying."
Laura turned to her.
"I wish I were."
Daniel had married Laura when they were twenty-two. Mia was born two years later. Before Mia's first birthday, Daniel began traveling for work.
During those trips, he met Vanessa.
He told Vanessa his marriage was already over. Chloe was born eleven months after Mia.
For several years, Daniel moved between the two homes. He told Laura he was building a business. He told Vanessa he was waiting for his divorce to become final.
When Laura discovered the affair, Daniel chose Vanessa.
He promised Mia he would visit.
At first, he came every few weeks. Then every few months. Eventually, he vanished.
Chloe stared at him.
"You said you did not have another child."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"I was trying to protect you."
"From my sister?"
The office door opened.
Vanessa hurried inside, still wearing her supermarket uniform. Chloe looked horrified.
"Why are you dressed like that?"
"I came straight from work."
Chloe glanced toward the hallway, afraid her friends might see.
Daniel introduced Vanessa as his wife, but Laura noticed Vanessa was not wearing her wedding ring.
Principal Hart postponed the meeting and asked the families to settle down.
In the parking lot, Chloe confronted her parents.
"Tell them about the house. Tell them about your company."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
They no longer owned the large house Chloe showed in her social media posts. The bank had taken it two years earlier.
Daniel did not own the luxury cars either. He rented them when meeting clients. The beautiful homes in Chloe's photographs were properties he was trying to sell.
Vanessa and Chloe were living in Vanessa's mother's apartment.
Chloe turned to Daniel.
"You said we were moving back after your investment closed."
Daniel reached for her.
She stepped away.
Mia had spent years believing Chloe possessed everything she lacked.
Money. Confidence. A father.
Now Chloe understood that the father she had defended had built her entire life from lies.
"You did not lose one daughter," Chloe whispered. "You lied to both of us."
