The Barefoot Girl Who Stopped the Wedding

CHAPTER 2 - NAMES NOBODY WANTED SPOKEN

The security guard crossed the marble floor quickly, ignoring the furious woman in blue.

"Marisol," he said again, dropping to one knee so he wouldn't tower over her. "It's me. Tomas."

The little girl's shoulders loosened for the first time.

Around them, wealthy guests in silk and tailored suits stared as if the ballroom had been invaded by a ghost. The groom looked from Tomas to the child, then to his bride.

"Elena," he said, voice sharpening, "who are they?"

The bride in red did not answer.

The older woman in blue did. "This is some disgusting trick."

But Tomas stood up and faced her. "No, Senora Valez. I know this child."

That changed the room.

Marisol clutched the baby tighter. Tomas looked at the white blanket, then at her scraped legs and hollow cheeks. His jaw tightened.

"Where is Rosa?" he asked gently.

Marisol blinked hard. "She died two weeks ago."

The words landed heavier than any shout.

Tomas closed his eyes for a brief second. "Your grandmother?"

Marisol nodded.

A hand flew to the bride's mouth again. Her white gloves trembled.

The groom stepped closer. "Elena. Tell me what this is."

Still she said nothing.

So Marisol did.

"My abuela cleaned houses outside Merida. A lady came one night with this baby. She said she would come back in two days." Marisol looked straight at the bride. "She never came back."

The woman in blue gave a harsh laugh. "Absurd."

Marisol flinched, then reached into the fold of the white blanket and pulled out a small gold earring with a red stone.

The bride's hand flew to her left ear.

She wore only one.

Gasps rose from the nearest tables.

Tomas took a slow breath. "Marisol," he said, "did Elena leave anything else?"

Marisol nodded and pulled a folded church program from inside her dress, worn soft from being handled too many times.

On the front was today's wedding date.

On the inside, in hurried handwriting, were six words:

If I don't return, find Tomas.

"She never came back."

The groom snatched the paper, and when he read the note, he looked at Elena as if he no longer knew the woman he was about to marry.
