The Barefoot Girl Who Stopped the Wedding
CHAPTER 3 - THE CHILD SHE HID
The ballroom had become a courtroom without a judge.
The groom, Mateo, read the note twice. His face lost its anger and hardened into something worse.
"Did you know about this?" he asked Tomas.
Tomas shook his head. "I knew Elena years ago. Before she left home. Before her mother decided certain mistakes had to disappear."
Senora Valez stepped forward, every inch of her glittering with outrage. "Watch yourself."
But Tomas did not back down. "I drove for this family once. I remember the day Elena was sent away at seventeen."
The room shifted with that. Guests looked at the elegant mother, then at the bride.
Mateo turned to Elena. "Seventeen?"
Elena's eyes filled. "I was pregnant."
The confession was barely louder than breath, but it broke whatever remained of the wedding.
No one spoke.
Then Senora Valez did what people like her always do when truth arrives.
She blamed the weakest person in sight.
"This girl is lying for money. Someone taught her this."
Marisol shook with fear, but she did not move. "My abuela never lied."
Mateo crouched in front of her. His voice softened. "What was your grandmother's full name?"
"Rosa Delgado."
Tomas made a low sound of recognition. "She worked at the Valez summer property. Elena used to bring her books."
Elena closed her eyes.
That small detail made the story feel suddenly real in a way diamonds never could.
Mateo rose. "Elena. Is that baby yours?"
Her mouth trembled. "Yes."
The word was devastating.
Senora Valez grabbed her daughter's arm. "Say nothing else."
Elena pulled free for the first time that evening. "No."
Tears slipped through her careful makeup. "My mother took me to a private clinic. She said the baby would be placed with a safe family. After I gave birth, they told me the child had already been sent away. I searched. I never found him."
Marisol looked down at the baby. "His name is Diego. Abuela named him because no one came."
Mateo stared at the infant, then at Elena. "You let me stand at an altar while this child existed?"
"I only found out where he was three days ago," Elena said. "I went to Rosa's house at night. Rosa was already too sick to stand. She made me swear I would come back with help. Then Mama's people found me there and dragged me away."
Tomas looked at Senora Valez. "You sent people?"
Her silence was answer enough.
Then Marisol added the one thing no one expected.
"Abuela said the baby isn't the only thing she took."
"My abuela never lied."
From inside the white blanket, tucked beneath the baby, Marisol pulled out a sealed envelope with Elena's name written on it.
