The Silver Tag Marked Baby #2

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

Nurse Willa Grant looked nothing like the villain Dana had pictured for eight long seconds.

She looked tired. Fragile. Ashamed.

An airport attendant stood behind her wheelchair, uncertain whether to leave. Willa waved him away. Her hands, spotted with age, twisted a handkerchief in her lap.

Dana stayed standing. Ryan pressed against her side. Caleb did not come closer, but he did not run.

"You saved him?" Dana said. "From what?"

Willa lifted her eyes. "From a system that failed mothers like you every day."

Her voice shook, but the words were clear. She had been the night nurse in the maternity ward. Dana had delivered early after a difficult pregnancy. One twin was healthy enough to stay with her. The second, smaller twin, had developed breathing distress and been rushed to another floor during an equipment failure and a chaotic shift change. Paper charts had been switched. Identification bands had come loose in the emergency.

"By morning," Willa said, "another infant had died. The records were wrong. Your chart was wrong."

Dana felt sick.

"I told the doctor," Willa continued. "He said the hospital would fix it quietly. Then your husband overheard us. He came looking for the baby. Before he could return, he was killed."

Ryan's face crumpled. He had heard his father's death story many times. Never this part.

"What about me?" Caleb asked.

Willa looked straight at him. "The transfer ward closed two weeks later. You were sent into state care under the wrong file. I tried to trace you. I failed."

"Then why the note? Why the airport?" Dana asked.

Willa touched the pearls at Dana's throat with her eyes, as if recognizing them from that long-ago night. "Because Logan was where Marcus was supposed to meet a social worker. I kept that tag. When I finally found the boy in foster records, I gave it to Elena and told her if he ever started asking who he was, bring him here on the anniversary. I was coming today to tell the truth."

Caleb's shoulders trembled. "You waited eight years."

"No," Willa whispered. "I carried eight years."

Dana looked at her sons. One child had been loved every day. The other had survived every day.

Then an overhead voice announced Dana and Ryan's flight was now boarding.

Ryan looked at Caleb.

Then at his mother.

"If we leave now, he loses us twice."

Dana looked at the boarding gate, then reached for Caleb's hand.
