The Silver Tag Marked Baby #2

CHAPTER 5 - NO ONE GETS LEFT AGAIN

Dana did not board the plane.

She watched the line move without them until the gate agent closed the door. It was a small kind of loss. A missed trip. A change fee. Nothing compared to eight stolen years.

She turned fully toward Caleb.

"You don't have to trust me today," she said. "You don't have to call me Mom. But I am not walking away from you."

Caleb stared at her hand for a long moment before taking it. His fingers were cold.

Ryan let out a shaky breath. Then he did something no adult there could have managed with more grace. He stepped in front of Caleb, tugged at his own blue vest, and said, "We're the same size. Mostly."

Caleb blinked.

Ryan gave a nervous half smile. "You can wear it if you want."

Dana laughed and cried at once.

Miss Elena sat with them for the next two hours while airport police, child services, and a hospital administrator were called. Willa gave a full recorded statement. The old records still existed in storage, enough to prove what should never have needed proving. No miracle erased the damage, but truth finally had a body, a voice, and two eight-year-old faces.

In the weeks that followed, Caleb moved into Dana's home under emergency family placement. It was not easy. He hid food in his room. He woke from bad dreams. He did not like closed doors.

Ryan hated sharing at first. Then he started teaching Caleb how to knot a tie.

Dana kept the silver tag in a small wooden box at night, but Caleb wore it whenever fear rose in him. Ryan would tap it and say, "That's how we found you."

The pearls Dana had once clutched in terror became something else too. On the day the adoption judge confirmed Caleb's identity and custody, she took the necklace off and placed it in Miss Elena's hands.

"For waiting with him," she said.

Months later, the boys raced through the airport again, both in blue jackets this time, both laughing.

At security, Caleb looked back and asked, "We're all going together, right?"

Dana took a son in each hand.

"Yes," she said. "No one gets left again."

Then Caleb touched the silver tag under his shirt and smiled, as if another question still waited somewhere ahead.
