Fired for Saving the Wrong Man

CHAPTER 1 - THE MAN BY THE DOOR
"Drag this old beggar outside right now! You're ruining our hotel's image!"
The words cracked through the five-star lobby louder than the jazz piano had.
Ethan Cole was already on one knee beside the old man near the sliding glass doors. The man wore an old brown jacket, the kind with frayed cuffs and a broken zipper. One hand clutched his chest. His legs had folded under him so hard that Ethan had heard the impact over the traffic outside.
"Sir? Can you hear me?"
The man blinked, pale and sweaty.
Ethan dropped the luggage cart and slid an arm behind his back. He had seen low blood sugar before. His mother used to get it when money was tight and she skipped meals.
"He needs help," Ethan said, looking up.
Vanessa Price, the lobby manager, came at him in sharp black heels and a sharper face. Her tailored suit looked like armor. "I said get him out of here."
Ethan ignored her. He lifted the old man carefully and guided him to a leather sofa in the seating area. He opened a bottle of warm water from the service station and held it out.
The man's hand trembled as he took it. Then he gripped Ethan's wrist with surprising strength.
"Thank you, son... God bless you."
"Just rest, sir. Take your time."
For a second, Ethan felt the whole room soften.
Then Vanessa stormed over, yanked the name tag from his chest, and flung it onto the marble floor.
"You're fired! Clear out your locker and get the hell out!"
Ethan stood slowly, cheeks burning, but he kept his shoulders straight. "I did nothing wrong."
He turned and walked away while the old man watched him.
At the elevator, Ethan looked back once.
The weak, grateful stranger was gone.
The old man sat upright, pulled a black-and-gold phone from inside his jacket, and said in a cold, commanding voice, "Fire the manager... and get the entire board here in five minutes."
