Fired for Saving the Wrong Man

CHAPTER 3 - THE NAME HE LEFT BEHIND

The woman introduced herself as Margaret Vale, Arthur's younger sister and a member of the hotel's board.

Ethan stayed standing.

He didn't want coffee. He didn't want the sofa. He wanted to understand why the founder of the hotel had tested his own lobby dressed like a man no one would notice.

Arthur folded his hands over the black-and-gold phone. "I visit properties unannounced. Not often like this, but often enough. I wanted to see who we really are when no one important appears to be watching."

Vanessa opened her mouth. Arthur silenced her with one look.

Margaret kept staring at Ethan. "Your father's name," she asked gently, "was it Daniel Cole?"

Ethan felt something cold move through him.

"Why?"

"Because," she said, voice unsteady, "Daniel Cole was my nephew."

The room narrowed.

"My father wasn't anybody's nephew," Ethan said. "He was a mechanic from Dayton who abandoned his family."

Arthur's face changed. Not with anger. With pain.

"Daniel was my son," he said.

Ethan laughed once, with no humor in it. "No. My father left us when I was eight. If he belonged to this family, he would have come back. He would have sent something. Anything."

Margaret reached into her handbag and pulled out an old photo, edges worn white. A younger Arthur stood beside a smiling man with Ethan's same eyes and same crooked left eyebrow. Between them was a little boy of about six, sitting on someone's shoulders.

Ethan's breath caught.

That boy was him.

"No," he said again, weaker now.

"Daniel came here twelve years ago," Arthur said. "He begged me for help. I refused him. We had not spoken in years. He had married against my wishes and walked away from this family. I told myself pride was principle. Three weeks later, he died in a highway crash."

Ethan's knees nearly gave out.

"My mother told me he chose not to come back."

Arthur's voice dropped. "Then your mother was protecting you from the truth, or from me."

Vanessa suddenly stepped in. "Sir, before this goes further, there is something you should know. Daniel did come back once after that. To this hotel."

Every eye turned to her.

She swallowed. "And I was the one who turned him away."
