She Stood Barefoot Before the Guns

CHAPTER 2 - THE SISTER IN THE DOORWAY

Margaret Cross was the last person Elena expected.

Elegant even at midnight, in a navy coat over a silk blouse, she stepped into the room as if armed men in the house were an unpleasant scheduling issue. Her silver hair was pinned neatly back. Her face was tense, but not frightened.

Julian's jaw tightened. "You had no right."

"I had every right," Margaret said. "You stopped trusting everyone. You turned your home into a fortress and your life into an interrogation room."

Elena stood frozen between them, still shaken by the sight of Julian standing. The wheelchair behind him looked like a lie with polished handles.

"You knew?" she asked Margaret.

Margaret nodded once. "I knew he could walk again. I didn't know he would stage this tonight."

Julian's eyes shifted to Elena. "And I didn't know my sister would hire someone under a false name."

The room felt smaller now than it had with guns in it.

Elena wrapped her arms around herself. "I never meant to deceive you."

"No?" Julian asked. "Then why did you apply with forged references from a rehabilitation clinic in Hartford?"

Because the real reason would sound worse.

Because six months ago, Elena had received a letter with no return address. Inside was one sentence in Margaret's careful handwriting: He won't let anyone help him, but he needs someone kind more than someone qualified.

Margaret had found Elena through a grief support group at St. Anne's. They had spoken only twice before the job began. Margaret knew Elena's late husband had died after refusing care from everyone who loved him. She knew Elena lived with regret like a second spine.

"I brought her here," Margaret said quietly. "Because after Daniel died, she told me the one thing she wished she had done was stand in front of the pain before it swallowed someone she loved."

Julian went still at the name.

Elena saw it then. Not anger. Recognition.

"You knew my husband?" she whispered.

Margaret looked at her with tired eyes. "Not Daniel. Daniel Cross. Our brother."

The room tipped under Elena's feet.

Julian stared at her as if seeing a face from another life.

Then he asked the question that made her blood run cold.

"Did your husband ever tell you why my brother called him the night before he died?"

On the side table beside the wheelchair, Julian picked up an old photograph Elena had never seen before.

In it, her husband was standing beside two younger men.

One of them was Julian.

"I never meant to deceive you."
