She Stood Barefoot Before the Guns
CHAPTER 4 - THE LETTER NEVER OPENED
Noah Brenner was sixty-three, broad-shouldered, and worn down by years that had not been gentle.
Rain darkened his jacket. He held the envelope carefully, as if it were something alive.
"I should've brought this sooner," he said when Elena, Julian, and Margaret met him in the library. "But shame makes cowards out of decent men."
The envelope was yellowed at the edges. Tom Walsh's name was written across the front in uneven pen strokes.
Elena sat down before opening it. Her bare feet were cold on the hardwood. She became suddenly aware of them again, the way she had run without thinking, the way old fear always reached the body first.
Inside was a single letter.
Tom, if Noah gets this to you, it means I didn't do what you asked. I know you said to stay where there were lights. I know you said to call 911 and keep talking. I hung up because I saw Julian's car by the water and thought maybe I could take the keys and go home before anyone knew. I wanted one good thing to be true. But the car had already rolled. He was inside.
Elena looked up sharply.
Julian had gone pale. "What?"
Noah nodded, tears in his eyes. "I was there later. Daniel was drunk, but he wasn't alone. He found your car in the lake road ditch. He tried to help you."
Margaret gripped the back of a chair.
Julian spoke slowly. "My accident wasn't last winter's first accident."
Noah shook his head. "No. You wrecked there years earlier, after fighting with Daniel. You hit your head. Daniel pulled you out before the car slid farther. By the time he got you onto the bank, he was freezing and barely standing. He wandered back toward the dock. I found him too late."
The room held the full weight of it.
Daniel had not died because no one came.
He had died trying to save his brother.
Elena looked at Julian. The wheelchair. The test. The bitterness. It all shifted into something more fragile.
Julian's voice broke at last. "He called Tom because he wanted help staying alive. Then he saved me anyway."
Noah reached into his pocket again.
"There's one more thing. Daniel left a voicemail on an old phone. I kept it because I couldn't bear to erase him."
He placed the phone on the table and pressed play.
Daniel's weak voice filled the room.
"If Julian asks... tell him I kept my promise."
Julian closed his eyes.
Then the monitor on the security desk by the door flickered, and the night guard's voice came over the intercom.
"Sir, Detective Ruiz is here. She says the road report from that old crash was falsified."
"If Julian asks... tell him I kept my promise."
