Why the Woman at the School Gate Knew Noah's Name
CHAPTER 3 - THE NOTE IN THE BACKPACK
The principal's office smelled of dust, printer ink, and weak coffee. Emily sat beside Noah on a vinyl chair, her knees swinging but her face unusually still. She had given Noah her juice box without asking permission. He held it in both hands but had not opened it.
Caroline stood by the window while Officer Ramirez read the note again.
Lily Hart. Left for the night shift at Green Hollow Care Center. Did not come home. Noah had waited until morning, then walked to school because his mother always said school was the safest place if anything went wrong.
Caroline pressed her fingers to her mouth.
"You said you know her," Officer Ramirez said.
"I knew her," Caroline answered. "She's my sister."
The principal blinked. Mr. Bell, now standing by the door, let out a quiet breath as if a puzzle piece had dropped into place.
Noah looked up at Caroline with open distrust. "My mom said we don't have family."
The words landed hard because Caroline knew why Lily would have said them.
Seven years earlier, after their mother died, Caroline had wanted order. Forms, plans, doctors, calls returned. Lily wanted none of it. She had been pregnant, scared, and angry at a world that measured worth by steady jobs and neat homes. When Caroline pushed, Lily heard judgment. When Lily ran, Caroline called it irresponsibility.
Then both of them had chosen pride over love.
Emily broke the silence first. "If she's your sister, why didn't you find them before now?"
Children could ask the cleanest, cruelest questions.
Caroline met Noah's eyes. "Because I failed her."
Officer Ramirez cleared his throat. "This isn't only a missing person case."
He slid a clear plastic evidence bag onto the desk. Inside was the silver round pendant.
Noah lurched to his feet. "You can't take that."
"We found blood on the chain clasp," the officer said. "And there may be something engraved inside."
Caroline stared. Their father had given matching pendants to both sisters when they were girls. A compass rose on the front. A message hidden inside.
Lily's had disappeared the year she vanished.
Officer Ramirez opened a file.
"We also found security footage from the care center. Lily left work before midnight with a woman who signed in under your name, Caroline."
"My mom said we don't have family."
The room went cold as Officer Ramirez turned the screen toward her.
