Why the Woman at the School Gate Knew Noah's Name

CHAPTER 4 - THE NAME SOMEONE STOLE

Caroline watched the grainy video twice.

The woman in the frame wore a beige coat and had dark hair tucked into a scarf. From a distance, the build looked almost like hers. But the walk was wrong. Too quick. Too guarded.

"That's not me," Caroline said.

Officer Ramirez nodded once. "I believe you. But someone wanted Lily to think it was."

Noah clutched the edge of Emily's chair. He seemed smaller now, not because he was weak, but because hope had entered the room and made fear bigger.

Caroline held out her hand to him. After a long pause, he placed the pendant in her palm. The metal was warm from his skin.

Her thumbnail found the tiny groove at the edge. She pressed, and the pendant sprang open.

Inside, worn but readable, were the words their father had chosen after their mother first left them for months at a time:

When lost, follow love home.

Emily leaned in. "That's beautiful."

Caroline almost laughed at the pain of it. "My sister and I used to promise we'd never leave each other."

Officer Ramirez's phone rang. He listened, asked two short questions, then looked up.

"Lily was admitted to St. Agnes just after midnight," he said. "Head injury. She gave a false name before she collapsed."

Noah was already standing.

At the hospital, Lily looked pale and older than thirty, a white bandage wrapped around her temple. For one terrible second Caroline thought she would open her eyes and turn away.

Instead, Lily stared at the pendant.

"You kept it," she whispered to Noah.

"He always does," Caroline said.

Lily's gaze moved slowly to her sister. Not soft. Not hard. Just stunned. "I didn't call you."

"I know."

Lily closed her eyes. "Mara did this."

Caroline frowned. "Mara from the care center?"

Lily nodded weakly. "She was stealing medication. I found records. She said no one would believe me. Then she saw the pendant in my locker and asked where I got it. She knew your name. She said families like ours never come back for each other."

Officer Ramirez stepped closer. "Where are the records?"

Lily's fingers trembled as she pointed at Noah's backpack.

"Inside the lining," she said. "I stitched them there."

"When lost, follow love home."

Mr. Bell, who had carried the backpack in from the car, slowly turned it over and found fresh cuts in the seam.
