The Secret Recipe That Brought a Son Back to His Mother

CHAPTER 3 - THE HOUSE OF LIES

Daniel did not sleep.

At dawn he sat in his late father's study with the photograph under the green-shaded lamp and the old household ledgers spread before him. Whitmore House had belonged to his family for seventy years. If his mother had lived six months after her "death," then someone in this house had hidden it.

Maybe more than hidden it.

By nine o'clock, Clara stood in the doorway, still in her plain uniform, looking as if she regretted coming at all.

"I shouldn't have shown you that," she said.

"You absolutely should have."

She stepped inside. Morning light caught the silver cross at her throat. "My mother made me promise not to ask questions. She said the past had already cost enough."

"And yet she kept the photograph."

Clara's face softened. "She used to hold it when she thought I was asleep."

Daniel opened the oldest ledger. Staff wages. Deliveries. Private medical visits. His finger stopped on a name written repeatedly over four months after Elena's reported death.

Dr. Samuel Pike.

Not the family doctor he remembered.

"What is it?" Clara asked.

He turned the book toward her. "My father paid a doctor in cash. Repeatedly. At the gardener's cottage."

Clara frowned. "The cottage at the edge of the property? Why would anyone hide there?"

Daniel let out a bitter breath. "Because no guests went near it. No one important."

The word tasted ugly.

Clara looked at the photograph again. "My mother had an old scar across her side. She once told me she almost died bringing me into the world."

Daniel looked up sharply. "How old did she say she was when you were born?"

"Twenty-eight."

He did the math quickly.

It fit.

Too well.

A cold idea entered the room before either of them said it.

"If my mother was alive then," Daniel said slowly, "and if she gave birth years later..."

Clara stepped back. "No."

But they were both already thinking the same thing.

Before Daniel could speak again, his housekeeper, Mrs. Weller, appeared at the door, pale and rigid.

"Sir," she said, looking from him to Clara. "You need to come to the archive room."

"What happened?"

She swallowed hard.

"Someone has broken into your father's locked cabinet. And the only file missing is the one labeled Elena."
